Using McLuhan’s tetrad, Solid State Drives (SSDs) can be viewed as an emerging technology.
They enhance our experience with computers by making our interactions more real time. The SSD's speed of access for retrieving data and avoiding the time it takes to wait for the disk to rotate for the next read (latency), makes things like Windows boot time much more acceptable. The potential for reliability over a mechanical hard disk is also a great plus. Both should drive SSDs to replace standard hard disks.

The speed of access is important as it must compare with the human memory's speed of access. The amount of storage and clarity of images already surpasses our memory's ability. In the future storage in the clouds could make local computer storage obsolete.

  1. Bill,

Your tetrad is nicely done. SSDs are a great improvement to technology. The extra storage and quick access to information will make it an item that will be purchased by those in technology.

The cloud has been diamond in the rough. It has engraved a new way in connecting storage anywhere without carrying around devices in your pocket.

How will your company use this technology?

    1. Carolyn,
We are using it to provide an emergency notification system. From the corporate web page (http://www.everbridge.com/content/?alias=why-everbridge):
"The key to successfully managing incidents, both emergency and day-to-day operational incidents, revolves around making informed decisions and having the right systems to communicate them quickly and effectively. Everbridge empowers better decisions with interactive communications throughout the incident lifecycle to protect your most important assets."
The SaaS software notifies all the needed people of an emergency or problem. The notifications could go to their home phone, email, cell phone, etc. The notifications are things like a tornado approaching or a student with a gun at a university.

  3. Bill,
The great part about SSD's is the their are no moving parts so the failure rate is greatly diminished. The VID Virtual Desktop Interface has no moving parts and the data is cloud storage. My husbands school system is moving towards VID which will save the system a lot of money vs buy towers every 3-5 years.

    1. I had not looked at Virtual Desktop Intergration. The ability to allow the centralization of applications and control by the IT specialists will help reduce cost and make the user's life easier. That is a great blend of technologies!

VDI.(2011). What is VDI retrieved from http://www.tricerat.com/solution/topic/vdi

  4. Bill,
At the initial thought of Rhymes of History, I thought it was technology compared to past technology. That is not the case because it is a system used to enhance the technology. This was a well thought out Rhyme of History. I believe that as technology changes the thought process can too. True Christians still give glory to God for blessings of food, but do you think the thought process has changed with the technology since then or do people just see it as I make money to buy my food now?

    1. Kristin,

I think both exist. For many, The focus is to give thanks for any food they receive, seeing it as a gift and blessing. Many others see it as a required necessity and work to get what they want.
